UST’s Neo-Centennial Celebration!

Capping off the Quadricentennial celebration of the oldest University in Asia, UST surely made this ending a beginning of the next 100 years to come for the Royal, Pontifical and Catholic University in the Philippines. A “Neo-centennial” theme was set to see the coming of the 401st year of the university. It’s a week long celebration that showcased a lot about the history and life of UST. Throughout the week, several activities were lined up (photo-exhibit, lectures, procession, fair, etc.) for everyone. Last Jan. 25, the Thomasian community time travelled to the past as the campus transforms back in the 19th century. Dubbed as “Velada Tomasina”, the Thomasian community went to UST donning period costume while strolling around Benavides Park/Lover’s Lane, which became “Ciudad Santo Tomas”, that was transformed to get the feel of the old UST campus when it was still situated in Intramuros.

I didn’t get to go to school that day so I just witnessed everything through photos and tweets. What a regret! Credits to the owners of these awesome photos!

UST guards also on their period costumes! (CTTO)

Kalesas were even present around the campus! (CTTO)

And then last night was the final part and the closing of the year long Quadri celebration. And this is, by far, one of the best nights I had as a Thomasian! Good thing I went or else I will miss all the fun and regret it for the rest of my life! haha!

The happenings for that day started as early as 8am. We only went back to UST past 6pm after watching “Tahanan” at SM Manila (which I think I would blog about in my next post). We arrived just in time before the 40,000 voices started (where 4k+ Thomasians will sing songs altogether). We weren’t officially a part of it so we just searched for a spot to settle in while waiting for the fireworks.

And the last two songs: "Ako'y Isang Tomasino" and the "UST Hymn"

And a few minutes more, the countdown begins for the most awaited Pyromusical! Amateur videos can also be seen on Youtube, if you want to hear the live and loud cheer of the spectators. =]

The most unforgettable Pyromusical, ever! I was in awe and out of breath, literally. haha! I was already wondering where the fireworks will come out because I saw a lot SLRs already facing the Main Building but some where also near the arch. But guess what, it’s all over the campus (as in literally! LOL) So we were standing at Lover’s Lane as the countdown started. We were facing the stage/field because it usually starts there. But then, when the Pyromusical started the fireworks were out of sight. Just to know, from the screen, that it’s already bursting up in front of the Arch of the Centuries! So the people, at Lover’s Lane at least, started running to the middle pathway because the trees were obstructing our sight. It was adrenaline rush! I also started to tag one of my friends because I think I might get lost because we all scattered in different directions while running. haha!! It was so inexplicable! The wonderful lights bursting along with the beat of the music. And the music… super goosebumps. Classy. Perfect. And a few seconds after the end of the fireworks at the Arch, burst of lights started popping out at the top of the Main Building! And all heads turned around and up the cross! This is the moment you just won't ever forget. And after that enchanting array of lights, moments later, the music changed to an upbeat tune of Adele’s “Rolling in the deep”. And we all found ourselves running (again) towards the open field as the fireworks lit up and above the stage AND the UST church! The music stopped (techincal problem?) in the middle of the show but redeemed itself seconds after. After a dramatic vibe there at the Arch and Main Building, here comes something to hype up the crowd. Very nice! Ikaw na talaga USTe! =] And then it was followed by Yellowcard’s “Yellow”. The dancing shots of light! Woah! Galing! *speechless* And the finale. *speechless again* GOOSEBUMPS. I LOVE UST! =] The songs Rolling in the deep and Yellow would forever be close to my heart from now on. A lot of running and a lot more FUN. A very memorable night, indeed. I remember being annoyed with fireworks because of the very loud noise it brings but being a Thomasian changed everything. Awww… Now, I’m looking forward for our Baccalaureate Mass this year. Gonna study hard! =]

And these were the moments I wish I had a tripod. =[ I tried improvising by using my friend’s shoulder. And nothing worth posting came out. Lol. So CREDITS AGAIN TO THE OWNERS OF THESE AMAZING PHOTOS.

And after that ever most amazing Pyromusical display, it’s time for Fiesta! Heaps of Lechon: Baboy, Chicken and Baka were served for everyone.

Picnic at Lover’s Lane with my ”block mates” forever. One of the best days in my college life. A variety show was held as the wonderful night continues. Thomasian talents and celebrity performers were there to perform throughout the night.

AJ Rafael: Red Roses Tour (Manila)

Fan girl mode: ON

Last night was the last leg of the Red Roses SE Asian tour of AJ Rafael and his band. They were supposed to end it up in Australia, but there were some changes which moved it to July. And so Manila ended up as their last stop (because it's more fun in the Philippines! Haha!). The ticket sales went fast that they added a 5pm show to accommodate more.  Since the day he announced the tour in his twitter, I have always been on the lookout for the details. It still seems surreal that all the things I was wishing for him back then was all starting to coming true! I've been subscribed to him for so many years now that I think I almost knew everything about him. Now I sound like a stalker. Haha! I was already listening to him with his other fellow YouTubers even before I started college, and that would be almost more than 5 years now. Woah! That's a good amount of years spent well with his great music. =] I still remember the day when he went here in the Philippines to do charity works. Feb. 6, 2010 - the first time I met him. I made him a simple sketch and he gave me hug. And that made my night! He did a m&g at MOA and performed a few songs with his ukulele, with Randolph too. And guess what, after a month I'm already having fun playing songs in my own ukulele. Oh yes, he inspires me that much! =]

Anyway, back to the concert, before I fill up all this space with unrelated stuff. So I got tickets for the 8pm show which happens to be a sold out show with an awesome (and wild, lol) crowd. The line was so long going to the entrance that we only managed to get in around 8:15.

The concert started around 8:45pm which is opened by Krissy and Ericka, an acoustic duo who also have a huge following in YouTube. They sang a mash-up of Super Bass and California Dreams followed by 2 of their original songs and ended up with another cover song. They did a great front act and so as the lights were dimmed everyone was already chanting "AJ!, AJ!" that as soon as AJ got in the stage everyone was already screaming. Yay! Goosebumps. =] He opened the show with a prayer. He sang one of my favorite praise song, "Heart of worship", which is just full of emotion and purity. And I super admired what he did there. It's the first time ever I got to see that in a concert. After that Noah, Andrew and Danny got up now on the stage. And let the EPIC SHOW begin!

AJ singing "Heart of Worship"

They first played the intro from the Red Roses album which is then followed by an awesome line up of his original songs. They did almost all the songs in his album. He also did his ever famous Disney medley. I got so giddy and didn't let this moment pass for me not to shout with everyone "I got 20!" for AJ, live! Haha! Gotta love that part. The band also gave way for Noah to sing his new original called "Let it be", which surely got a catchy rhythm too. Keana Valenciano was one of his guest that night. She sang some parts of "Without you" with AJ. They even got a Tagalog song duet, with their own rendition of "Bakit ngayon ka Lang". Imagine how the crowd got all hyped on hearing AJ sing a Tagalog song. And mind you, they nailed it perfectly! What a super great performance! Along the show, they also called out Krissy and Ericka again to join them to sing a Taylor Swift song entitled "Sparks Fly" which they already covered in one of their videos together in YouTube. In the middle of "We could happen" , things got a bit emotional where he AJ even stopped for a while to contain all his feelings. Aww. I can just feel how overwhelmed he was. Who wouldn't? If you can hear everyone singing along with your original tunes. Way to go AJ! You truly deserve all this!

"We Could Happen"

After their final song they all went now to the backstage. But seconds later, the crowd was already begging for more! And everyone went "AJ!, AJ!". Aww. The moments I love the most! =] I was also chanting with the crowd because I'm still hoping for him to sing "I just want you" which is my first fave original of him. And guess what, they came back again! A lot was also requesting for him to sing "Showstopper" which they gladly did. And of course everyone was singing along again! Well more than half of the crowd including me was always singing along with all his songs in the entire show. Oh yes, that's how we love him! And things got even crazy when suddenly the girls started to get up on stage and swarmed over AJ and the rest of the band. It was super crazy indeed! Thank God no one got hurt, but I can just understand how they just want to get close to AJ and sing with him on stage. And after the crowd was controlled they finally did "I Just want you". Finally! I'm complete! =] I was happily singing along for the entire song. Haha! I love you AJ for not forgetting to sing that! Hehe! And so the concert ended with a smile in everyone's face. That was one heck of an experience! All those who came that night can surely attest that AJ already got it big! I'm excited on what more is in store for him in the future.

What a night it was! Thank you Luna Co. and Monsoon Prod. and everyone who made this tour possible. And thank you AJ and his band for sharing your music to us! I'll always be a fan forever and ever. =]

PS. The sad part is I forgot my eyeglasses so their faces was a blur and I wasn’t able to bring in my cam so I didn't get to have any pictures. I'm seriously shattered but tried to just enjoy everything. I wasn't even able to join the m&g but AJ would be here until the 28th. I just hope one of these days I could bump into him. *fingers crossed* or maybe he could do a m&g somewhere because I desperately want him to sign my uke. I hope he sees this. =]

Graham Sansrival + Philippine Hunger Games

1st post of the year would be about... FOOD. Hehe. Can't help it. I was planning to put up a year ender post but I have a terrible memory. I suck at remembering things but maybe if I get to gather up everything I might do a late post for that. Besides, 2011 had been a great year for me. I'm super blessed and I had so many things to be thankful for!

Going back to food talk. Awhile ago I suddenly got bored and thought of "feeling expert" for a day again. Haha! I had long been planning to make this Graham Sansrival Cake which I should have already done last Christmas if only my parents didn't keep buying multiple cakes. It seems like they just don't want me to do this. Grr. Lol. So I finally found the interest again to do this before my mother could finish up the cashew nuts I will be using.

Graham Sansrival

• 1/2 cup butter
• 1/2 cup margarine
• 1 1/4 cup powdered/confectionery sugar
• 1 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
• Graham crackers
• chopped cashew nuts

1st step: Melt the butter and margarine and mix it well until smooth (1/2 cup is approx. half of the bar). Then add the sugar and vanilla extract and blend it until it looks creamy and fluffy. Also mix in some cashew nuts after.

2nd step*:  Put the base cracker in place and spread a thick amount of butter cream on top. Do this two more time to make three layers. Spread some more on the sides after. Then finish it off with a sprinkle of chopped cashew nuts on top. Chill for 30 mins.

*the original instruction was to build it topside down but because I always question things like this, I did it my own way. Hehe

** I only did half of the measurements and I got 2 and a half 3-layer cake. So if you'll follow the recipe above, you'll have more or less 5 cakes. It depends on how thick you spread it.

And here's the end product!

Disclaimer: And again, I only got the recipe from the box of Grahams so credits to them for making it easy for people like me. Haha! And one more thing, it's not really in my plan to turn this into a food blog. But I can't resist whipping out my magic. LOL. #noob

PSS. I got a "new" shoutbox right there in my sidebar. My old shoutbox provider just recently went in serious business so goodbye for freeloaders like me. err. So if you'll notice my box already got some msgs from 2011. I signed up for a new one from some site I already used from the past, but the code given to me (I think) was the same from the ones I used in my previous blog(s) so maybe that's why it showed up some past msgs. Anyway, kunwari meron pumapansin sa shoutbox ko so may announcement pa talaga ako. haha.
